What does it mean to be AKC registered?

The American Kennel Club is a US-based purebred dog registry and the oldest in the country. The AKC follows a standard for every dog breed based on appearance and temperament. If a dog does not meet this standard, they cannot become AKC registered, even if they are purebred.
